Reuben McBride

Reuben McBride born 16 Jun 1803 is the son of Daniel McBride and Abigail Mead. Daniel was a preacher and Abigail came from a long line of devout Quakers. He was baptized by Amasa Lyman into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was a faithful follower until his death in Utah in 1891. Following is a page from Pioneer Incidents of Rev. Harriet Columbia Williams

Harriet Columbia (certainly a dignified name!) was the wife of Reuben Augustus McBride, son of Reuben and Mary Ann McBride in post below. Reuben A. and Harriet are the parents of Charles McBride and grandparents of Sadie. Here Harriet is pictured with her two daughters.

Reuben McBride was the first man baptized for the dead in the Nauvoo Temple. Above is a letter written 1886 to his sister, Martha McBride Knight Kimball

Fillmore, Nov 1st/86
Dear Sister Martha,

I received your kind and welcome letter some time ago, but circumstances has been such that hindered me till now. The subject you wrote uppon (sic) is one of the greatest importance. The first work that I done for our dead relitives (sic) was done in Nauvoo, I think in the fall of 42, but you know, for you was there. Bro Joseph Smith made a bee and had the font in the temple filled with water from the wells. He said he wished me to be baptised (sic) in the font before I went back to Ohio. We met. Joseph spoke and the font was dedicated and he, Joseph, said, Blessed is the first man baptised in this font. Brigham Young baptised me. I was baptised six times. Joseph took off his mantle and wrapt it around me, took me in his carrage (sic), and drove to your house. He talked all the way goeing to you house and

The two ? women were Mary Crismon Lyman and Lois Victoria Lyman. It is unknown which is which.

Francis Marion Lyman

Francis Marion Lyman was the son of Amasa Lyman and father of Rhoda, Sadie McBride's mother. He was an apostle and the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He was beloved by the people and a favorite speaker. He visited nearly every town that had members of the church in the West during his apostleship. Francis M. Lyman's style was one of reconciliation and the ability to say unpleasant things in an uplifting way. He was known for his sincerity and at times sharpness. But everyone who met him came away a better person, no matter what his personal message was for them. He was hardened by years of hard work starting with crossing the plains at the age of 8 and driving livestock to California at the age of 11, yet he was known for his kindness and sincerity by members of the church. Utah State Penitentiary, a Federal prison was located at the present Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City. Our grand father Francis M. Lyman (in the suit) was interned there when the the Edmunds Act (1882), made bigamous cohabitation a misdemeanor and barred persons living in polygamy from jury service, public office, and voting. Over 1,300 Latter-day Saints were jailed as a result of the Edmunds Act. I'm not sure why he is not in the standard stripes.

Amasa Mason Lyman....This was a photo taken when he was an Apostle with the First Presidency and Counselors Heber C. Kimball and Willard Richards with Brigham Young as President...Other Apostles at the time who were in the photo and serving as well were, Orson Hyde, Parley P Pratt, Orson Pratt, Wilford Woodruff, John Taylor, George A Smith, Ezra T Benson, Charles C Rich ( who was Amasa's partner in San Bernadino), Lorenzo Snow, Erastus Snow and Franklin Richards...

If you have been to Nauvo you may have visted the Cultural Hall. On April 24, 1844 a historical play, a tragedy in five acts entitled Pizarro was presented to discharge of a debt against President Joseph Smith "contracted through the odious persecutions of Missouri and vexations law suits." A. Lyman along with other prominent names were cast members.
