John Tanner

John Tanner was the father of Maria Louisa Tanner Lyman,
Sadie McBride's great-grandmother.

JOHN TANNER (1778-1850) was born in Hopkinton, Washington County, Rhode Island, on 15 August 1778. He was the second child and oldest son of Joshua Tanner (1757-1807) and Thankful Tefft (1757-1822). On his mother's side he was a descendent of three Mayflower pilgrims: Richard Warren (1579-1628), and father and son Francis Cooke (1583-abt.1653) and John Cooke (1612-1695). John Tanner was a 7th generation American -- on his father's side he was a descendant of noble and royal English families such as Trevilian, Courteney, Beaumont, Tremayne, Tyrrell, Sergeaux, de Raleigh, de St.Clare, de Champagne, de Spencer, de Saluzza, Beauchamp, Plantagenet, de St.Valery, de Brittany, Marshall, Welsh prince Llewelyn "Fawr", William the Conqueror, etc.

Following is an excerpt from the Tanner Family website which contains a full biography of this amazing man including the miraculous healing of his crippled leg by two Mormon missionaries. He eventually gave up all his wealth to help establish what he saw as the kingdom of God restored to the earth through Joseph Smith.

According to Nathan Tanner, John's son "At this time at Bolton, notwithstanding his large family responsibilities, he had acquired wealth and had become a man of much influence, and was extensively known and universally respected." He had built a beautiful, spacious frame home for his large family (so well-built that it is still in use today, and is used as an inn, known as Green Acres). "He had commenced poor, but by hard work and economy, accumulated around him the comforts of life. John Tanner was the kind of man who could not be kept poor -- he prospered in everything he did. He carried on farming extensively; stock-raising and dairying on different farms which he had cleared from the surrounding forest, and he engaged in lumbering in all its branches, as he owned several sawmills and planing mills, and owned some 2,200 acres of timberland; he also had many acres of cleared land with homes and barns to accommodate a number of families (his married children and their families); and he had orchards in abundance." He also owned Green Island in Lake George, which at the time may not have been valuable, but later became the resort island on which the famous Hotel Sagamore was built. John Tanner "also kept a hotel at Bolton Landing of some considerable note (often he gave food and lodging to people who were unable to pay, and that he never turned anyone away). The poor and needy always found a friend in him; he would give them employment whereby to earn what they needed, if they were able to work, but would supply their needs just the same, whether they were able to work or not ... All of the various branches of business made work for his family and all he could hire."

Nathan says, "(My father) had a delightful home on the west side of Lake George, one of the finest sheets of water in the world ... In those days women turned the wheel by hand or foot that spun our yarn and made our cloth. In this we were not behind. We were a hard-working and hard-handed family. None of our means was willed to us, but earned by hard work and economy. My father used to say he enjoyed accumulating property around him, and if it could be spent wisely, it would prove a blessing. If spent otherwise it would prove a curse."

John Tanner was also an active Baptist lay preacher who was highly respected in the area. His name was said to be synonymous with benevolence, honesty and integrity.

letter written 1886 to his sister, Martha McBride Knight Kimball

Fillmore, Nov 1st/86
Dear Sister Martha,

I received your kind and welcome letter some time ago, but circumstances has been such that hindered me till now. The subject you wrote uppon (sic) is one of the greatest importance. The first work that I done for our dead relitives (sic) was done in Nauvoo, I think in the fall of 42, but you know, for you was there. Bro Joseph Smith made a bee and had the font in the temple filled with water from the wells. He said he wished me to be baptised (sic) in the font before I went back to Ohio. We met. Joseph spoke and the font was dedicated and he, Joseph, said, Blessed is the first man baptised in this font. Brigham Young baptised me. I was baptised six times. Joseph took off his mantle and wrapt it around me, took me in his carrage (sic), and drove to your house. He talked all the way goeing to you house and

Write as soon as you get this. God bless you.

Good Bye Your brother

Francis Marion Lyman
Born: 12 January 1840
Good Hope, Hancock, IL
Died: 16 November 1916
Salt Lake City, S-LK, Utah, United States

Francis Marion Lyman was the son of Amasa Lyman and father of Rhoda, Sadie McBride's mother. He was an apostle and the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He was beloved by the people and a favorite speaker. He visited nearly every town that had members of the church in the West during his apostleship. Francis M. Lyman's style was one of reconciliation and the ability to say unpleasant things in an uplifting way. He was known for his sincerity and at times sharpness. But everyone who met him came away a better person, no matter what his personal message was for them. He was hardened by years of hard work starting with crossing the plains at the age of 8 and driving livestock to California at the age of 11, yet he was known for his kindness and sincerity by members of the church. Many children throughout the church were names Francis Marion in honor of this great man. (For more on FML see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_M._Lyman

Utah State Penitentiary, a Federal prison was located at the present Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City. Our grand father Francis M. Lyman (in the suit) was interned there when the the Edmunds Act (1882), made bigamous cohabitation a misdemeanor and barred persons living in polygamy from jury service, public office, and voting. Over 1,300 Latter-day Saints were jailed as a result of the Edmunds Act. I'm not sure why he is not in the standard stripes.

"We mourn; we sorrow for our loved ones that go — our wives, our husbands, our children, our parents; we sorrow for them; and it is well and proper that we should moum for them and shed tears for the loss, for it is our loss; but it is their gain, for it is in the march of progress, advancement and development. It will be all right when our time comes, when we have finished our work and accomplished what the Lord required of us. If we are prepared, we need not be afraid to go, for it will be one of the most pleasant sensations that ever comes to the soul of man, whenever he departs, if he can go with a clear conscience into the presence of the Lord." - Francis Marion Lyman
